Bengali recognized as a 'Classical Language'

The Bengali language has been granted the status of 'classical language' in India. In total, five languages, including Bengali, have been officially recognized by the central government.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Indian Cabinet on Thursday (October 3).

According to Deutsche Welle, the Cabinet meeting approved the recognition of Bengali, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, and Assamese as 'classical languages'.

Earlier, the languages Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Odia had been granted this recognition.
