BJP attacks Congress offices in West Bengal and Bihar, clashes erupt
Violence erupted at Congress offices in West Bengal and Bihar as BJP supporters allegedly attacked and vandalized party premises, sparking clashes between the two parties' workers. The unrest follows offensive remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, triggering widespread outrage.
Videos circulated by the media show workers from both parties exchanging blows with party flags and sticks. Several leaders and activists from both sides sustained injuries in the clashes, but no arrests have been reported yet. The Congress party has condemned the attacks in strong terms.
The controversy began during the ongoing “Voter Rights March” in Darbhanga, Bihar, where a man draped in a Congress flag allegedly made indecent remarks targeting the Prime Minister. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, prompting the BJP to file an FIR and demand an official apology from the Congress.
Darbhanga police confirmed that an accused individual has been arrested and presented in court. “A case has been registered at Simri police station,” officials stated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The violence spread to Bihar’s capital, Patna, where BJP supporters took to the streets in protest on Friday. When Congress workers responded with a counter-protest, violent clashes broke out, necessitating deployment of a large police force. Though the situation is under control, tensions remain high.
The unrest has spilled over into Kolkata as well. BJP organized a protest rally outside the West Bengal Pradesh Congress headquarters at Bidhan Bhavan on Friday. During the demonstration, BJP supporters allegedly stormed the Congress office, vandalizing property and causing damage. BJP leader Rakesh Singh is accused of leading the mob that also set fires outside the building.
Banners and posters of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were reportedly torn down. The West Bengal Pradesh Congress condemned the incident and filed a complaint with the Entally police station.
West Bengal Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy condemned the attack, stating, “No one resorts to such actions unless politically bankrupt. The Congress is exposing BJP’s wrongdoings nationwide, which seems to have angered them. They chose to attack when the office was empty. We urge the state administration to take strict action against the perpetrators.”
Bihar Congress leader Ashutosh alleged government complicity in the incident, saying, “Nitish Kumar is making a grave mistake. We will respond accordingly.”
In response, BJP leader Nitin Navin warned, “Every son of Bengal will take revenge on Congress for insulting our mother. We will ensure that justice is served.”
Home Minister Amit Shah condemned the remarks sharply on social media, saying, “Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, Congress politics has sunk to its lowest. A poor mother’s son has served as Prime Minister for 11 years, leading the nation forward — yet they refuse to accept it. Such language against the Prime Minister and his late mother is not only shameful but also a stain on democracy.”
BJP President J.P. Nadda added, “This vulgar attack has crossed all limits. Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav must apologize.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also condemned the incident, saying, “Making obscene remarks about the Prime Minister and his late mother is unacceptable. I strongly denounce such behavior.”
