BJP government to take oath in West Bengal on May 9
The formalities for forming a new government in West Bengal will be completed on May 9, when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led administration will take oath. State BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya confirmed the information.
May 9 is celebrated as Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary, or Rabindra Jayanti. The decision to form the government on this day is being seen as symbolically significant.
In the recent assembly election, the BJP won 206 seats, securing an absolute majority, ending the nearly 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
Although the name of the new chief minister has not yet been finalised, Suvendu Adhikari is the frontrunner among potential candidates. Other names in discussion include Dilip Ghosh, Nishith Pramanik, Agnimitra Paul, Rupa Ganguly and Shankar Ghosh.
Prime Minister Modi, after the victory, said, "The lotus has bloomed in West Bengal" and promised to fulfil people's expectations.
Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, alleged that results in more than 100 seats were "looted". Rahul Gandhi supported her allegations, claiming that election results in Assam and West Bengal were "stolen".
