BNP and Jamaat got the charter they wanted: Nasiruddin Patwary
Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP), said the interim government failed to show accountability in implementing the July charter. He said the government pleased all political parties through the charter implementation order but deceived the public. The order will not allow fundamental reforms. Nasiruddin claimed the charter was made according to BNP and Jamaat’s wishes.
He made the remarks on Friday, November 14, at a press conference held at NCP’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
Nasiruddin Patwary said, “We wanted to remove the fascist structure of ’72, but through this order we are still following the 1972 constitution. Preparations are underway for another Hasina after one leaves.”
The NCP leader said there is ambiguity in the four ‘yes’ votes in the public referendum. The government must clarify these issues. Only then will NCP sign the July charter. Although the charter has a legal basis, it lacks moral legitimacy. Even with goodwill, the government cannot act properly because of the two parties, he said. He reiterated that the charter was made according to BNP and Jamaat’s wishes.
Addressing political parties, he said, do not turn the reform process into an issue for vote banks. Doing so will lead the public to reject you.
Regarding the sale of nomination forms by the party, he said 1,011 forms have been sold so far. People from all professions, including doctors, teachers, and religious scholars, are taking the forms. Seeing public interest, the deadline has been extended to 20 September. The target for form sales is three thousand.
At the same time, NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain said many aspects of the public vote have been left to the discretion of political parties. Yet, we wanted full implementation of the reforms.
