The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday submitted nomination papers for party chairperson Khaleda Zia to contest the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election from Feni-1.

The papers were filed around 1:15pm at the district returning officer’s office by Khaleda Zia’s election coordinator Munshi Rafiqul Alam, also known as Majnu, along with BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintu and chairperson’s adviser Zainal Abedin, popularly known as VP Zainal.

Munshi Rafiqul Alam also filed his own nomination papers as a BNP candidate from the same constituency.

Central and district BNP leaders, including Rehana Akhter Ranu, Abu Taleb, Shahana Akhter Shanu, and district convener Sheikh Farid Bahar, were present during the submission.

Speaking to reporters, Munshi Rafiqul Alam said Khaleda Zia is the official BNP candidate for Feni-1 and party leaders are actively working on her behalf. Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo added that a backup candidate has been kept in view of Khaleda Zia’s health, but campaigning will continue for her even if she cannot participate in person.

Earlier, on December 21, BNP leaders led by central executive committee member Abu Taleb collected the nomination form for Khaleda Zia.

Feni Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Monira Haque confirmed that nomination papers have been submitted by both Khaleda Zia and Munshi Rafiqul Alam.

A total of 16 candidates from various parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, Bangladesh Congress, Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh, and Ganamukti Jote, have collected nomination papers for Feni-1.
