Bogura-2: former MP Jinnah withdraws from election citing security concerns
Shariful Islam Jinnah, former member of parliament and Jatiya Party candidate for Bogura-2 (Shibganj) constituency, has withdrawn from the election due to security concerns.
He addressed through an open letter to the people of Shibganj, stating that the current situation in his constituency does not fit for a free and fair voting environment.
Jinnah alleged that false cases have been filed against him and his supporters, many have been expelled from the area, and various threats and intimidation tactics are being used. He added that as a result, both ordinary citizens and political workers are living in extreme fear.
In his letter, Jinnah stated that politics should be a competition for development, not revenge. He added that under the current circumstances, participating in the election does not guarantee citizens’ rights but rather legitimizes fear and coercion.
He explained that he made this difficult decision out of respect for the safety and rights of the people of Shibganj.
Jinnah emphasized that withdrawing from the election does not mean stepping away from politics; rather, it is a protest in favor of justice and fairness. He urged the people of Shibganj to stand for peace, justice, and truth.
Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Ziaur Rahman said that he had heard about Jinnah’s withdrawal, but has not yet received any written notice.
