Bolivia has booked a spot in the intercontinental play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a stunning 1–0 victory over five-time champions Brazil on Wednesday.

Playing at high altitude in El Alto, Bolivia took full advantage of the challenging conditions to clinch a crucial win. Not only did they need a victory against Brazil, but they also had to rely on the outcome of the Colombia vs. Venezuela match — which ended 6–3 in favor of Colombia — to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Despite trailing in ball possession, Bolivia dominated in attack, registering 23 shots with 10 on target. In contrast, Brazil, although controlling the tempo for much of the game, could only manage 3 shots on target from 10 attempts.

The match’s only goal came during first-half stoppage time when Miguelito converted from the penalty spot. Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson dived in the right direction and managed to get a hand to the ball, but it wasn’t enough to prevent it from hitting the back of the net.

Bolivia created more chances in the second half, while Brazil showed flashes of attacking intent. However, no further goals were scored, sealing a memorable 1–0 victory for the hosts.

With the win, Bolivia finished seventh in the South American qualifiers with 20 points from 18 matches, securing a place in the intercontinental play-offs. Brazil ended the campaign in fifth with 28 points, having already secured direct qualification under coach Carlo Ancelotti.

From the CONMEBOL region, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay have now qualified for the 2026 World Cup, with Bolivia still fighting for a spot through the play-offs.
