Norway is set to face England today in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. This match is not just a battle between two European giants; it is also an emotional occasion for Erling Haaland. If they can defeat England, Norway will reach the World Cup semi-finals for the very first time, and the star striker has the opportunity to be one of the main heroes of that history.

Playing in the World Cup for the first time, Haaland has proven his capabilities in the ongoing tournament. Scoring goal after goal, he has secured his place among the tournament's top goalscorers. However, today's match is even more special for him because the opponent is England, the country where he was born and where a part of his childhood was spent.

Erling Haaland was born in the northern English city of Leeds. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was playing for the English club Leeds United at the time. He later joined Manchester City and remained in England until 2003. However, after a serious injury cut his career short, Alf-Inge returned to Norway with his family. Haaland then grew up in the town of Bryne. He took his first steps in football with the local club Bryne, which marked the beginning of his journey to becoming a professional footballer.

By virtue of his birth, Haaland could have chosen to represent the England national team. However, from a young age, he dreamed of taking the field in a Norway jersey. After representing Norway at every youth level, he made his senior debut at just 19 years old.

In a 2022 interview with Goal.com, Haaland said, "I lived in England for three and a half to four years, but I lived in Norway for the majority of my life. So, it was natural for me to choose Norway. If my father had played in England for a longer time, maybe the story would have been different. But I am a Norwegian, and I am proud of it."

Haaland has played 54 international matches for Norway so far. His goal tally in these matches stands at 62, establishing him as one of the greatest goalscorers in the country's history. Under his leadership, Norway has secured a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup after a long wait. If they can defeat England today, the Vikings will play in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time. Haaland is the biggest hope for fulfilling that dream.

Despite representing Norway in international football, Haaland's greatest success in club football has come in England. Since joining Manchester City in 2022, he has won the UEFA Champions League, two Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, one League Cup, one Community Shield, and one UEFA Super Cup. Additionally, the Norwegian star has won the Premier League Golden Boot three times.

Therefore, despite taking the field against his birthplace today, Haaland has only one goal: to guide his country, Norway, to their first-ever World Cup semi-final.
