Both the United States and Iran have claimed precedent victory after agreeing to a two-week temporary ceasefire, despite escalating confrontations in the region.

The truce was reached just before the deadline for Iran to begin attacks on civilian infrastructure. As part of the agreement, Iran has temporarily agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump described it in an AFP interview as a “complete and total victory” for the United States.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that its forces had achieved a “historic victory” against adversaries, asserting the opponent had been defeated.

Formal talks on ceasefire aimed at a lasting agreement are scheduled to begin in Pakistan next Friday.
