Brazil captain apologises after World Cup exit
Brazil captain Marquinhos has apologised to fans following the five-time champions' shock exit from the FIFA World Cup, admitting his side paid the price for wasting crucial chances in the Round of 16 defeat to Norway.
Brazil's title hopes came to an end after a 2-1 loss to Norway, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to send the Scandinavian side into the quarter-finals. Despite creating several clear-cut opportunities, including a penalty, Brazil failed to convert their chances.
Speaking after the match, Marquinhos said the defeat was difficult to process but acknowledged Norway had been more clinical when it mattered.
"It's hard to explain and even harder to speak after a result like this. Every ball matters in matches like these. Norway took their chances, while we wasted ours, including a penalty. We apologise to our supporters. At the World Cup, the team that makes fewer mistakes usually goes through," he said.
The veteran defender also accepted responsibility as one of the team's senior figures, stressing that experienced players must shoulder the blame and create the right environment for the next generation to develop.
Brazil's elimination marks another disappointing World Cup campaign for the South American giants, who entered the tournament as one of the favourites but fell short in the knockout stage.
