Brazil left recalculating knockout route after Morocco stalemate
Five-time world champions Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in their opening Group C match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, leaving the group finely poised after the first round of fixtures.
Brazil conceded early but fought back to secure a point, while Scotland moved to the top of the group after defeating Haiti in the other match of the day.
The result leaves Brazil’s qualification path intact but adds pressure ahead of their remaining group fixtures. The Seleção will next face Haiti on June 20 (Bangladesh time), a match widely viewed as a must-win given the relative strength of the opposition. They will then meet Scotland in a crucial final group clash on June 25 at 4am.
Despite the opening setback, Brazil still control their fate. Two wins from their remaining matches would take them to seven points and almost certainly secure a place in the Round of 16. Historical precedent also favours the South American giants, who advanced as group leaders in the 2022 World Cup with six points.
However, the race for top spot remains open. If Morocco win their remaining fixtures, they could also finish at the summit, with goal difference likely to decide the group winner. If required, fair play points and disciplinary records could further separate the sides.
Even a third-place finish would not end Brazil’s campaign, as the expanded format allows the best third-placed teams to progress to the knockout stage. However, finishing outside the top two could set up a difficult Round of 16 clash, potentially against the Netherlands.
With the group still wide open, Brazil now face mounting pressure to deliver maximum points in their remaining fixtures to avoid an early knockout-stage challenge.
