Brazil suffers major setback losing midfielder Wesley ahead of World Cup
Brazil have suffered a major setback just days before the FIFA World Cup, with promising right-back Wesley ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
The five-time world champions have named midfielder Ederson as his replacement in the final squad.
The 22-year-old defender sustained the injury during Brazil’s final warm-up match against Egypt. Wesley started the game brightly but appeared to feel discomfort in his thigh after just 15 minutes. Despite receiving treatment on the pitch, he was unable to continue and was subsequently substituted.
Further medical examinations confirmed a serious injury to the adductor muscle in his left thigh. Team doctors concluded that the defender would not recover in time for the tournament, forcing Brazil to withdraw him from the World Cup squad.
The injury comes as a significant disappointment for Wesley, who was set to feature in the first World Cup of his career.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the development in an official statement, wishing the defender a speedy recovery while announcing Ederson as his replacement.
The 26-year-old midfielder has established himself as a key figure for Italian side Atalanta, earning praise for his consistency, work rate and ability to link defence with attack. His performances in recent seasons have also attracted interest from several major European clubs, with reports linking him to a potential move to Manchester United.
Ederson has made three appearances for Brazil and last featured for the national team in March 2025. His inclusion offers coach Carlo Ancelotti an experienced and versatile midfield option heading into the tournament.
Reacting to Wesley’s absence, Ancelotti described the defender as an important part of the squad.
“Wesley is a valuable player for us. His pace, defensive contribution and attacking qualities will certainly be missed,” the Brazil coach said. “However, we believe Ederson can play an important role and help the team achieve its objectives.”
Ancelotti added that unexpected setbacks are part of major tournaments and expressed confidence in the depth of his squad.
Brazil enter the World Cup among the leading title contenders and will begin their campaign against Morocco on June 13. They will also face Haiti and Scotland in the group stage as they pursue a record-extending sixth World Cup crown.
While Brazil remain one of the favourites for the title, the loss of Wesley on the eve of the tournament represents an untimely setback for the Seleção.
