Brazil to begin World Cup campaign without Neymar
Brazil will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign without star forward Neymar, who has been ruled out of the team’s opening group-stage match against Morocco due to injury.
Head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Saturday (June 13) that the forward is still not fully recovered from a calf injury sustained in mid-May and is therefore not available for selection.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, has been undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to return to training next week, according to the coach.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Ancelotti praised the forward’s commitment during recovery, noting his continued importance to the squad beyond his on-field contributions.
“Neymar is working hard to return as soon as possible. His experience is also valuable for the younger players in the team,” Ancelotti said. “We did not include him only for his football ability but also for the leadership he provides.”
Despite the setback, the Brazil coach said the squad remains fully focused on their title ambitions and is prepared for a competitive tournament.
Brazil are aiming for a record-extending sixth World Cup title, with group-stage fixtures also scheduled against Haiti and Scotland following their opening match.
