Brazilian star Oscar retires at 34 due to heart condition
Brazilian midfielder Oscar has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 due to heart-related health issues.
The news was confirmed by his current club, São Paulo FC, on Saturday (April 5).
Oscar had been hospitalised for five days in November last year after experiencing complications from a condition later diagnosed as vasovagal syncope, which can cause sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to fainting.
Despite having a contract with São Paulo until 2027, the midfielder decided to end his career on medical advice.
In an emotional statement on social media, Oscar said he had wanted to play longer but must prioritise his health.
He added that he will continue supporting his club off the field.
Oscar enjoyed a decorated club career, winning two Premier League titles with Chelsea FC and three league titles with Shanghai Port FC. He returned to his boyhood club São Paulo in December 2024, but his health forced him into early retirement.
