Bricks thrown at car, narrowly escaped death: Mamata Banerjee

Allegations have emerged that the vehicle of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was attacked on Sunday, August 9. It is alleged that bricks, stones, shoes and water bottles were thrown at her car in Halishahar, North 24 Parganas district. Mamata claimed she narrowly escaped death in the incident.

Mamata was met with protests in Halishahar while on her way to meet the family of Birju Keot, the husband of a former Trinamool Congress councillor who allegedly died in police custody. Protesters surrounded her car and threw mud at the windows. At one point, bricks and other objects were hurled at the vehicle.

Police attempted to clear the protesters to bring the situation under control. Later, speaking to journalists, Mamata alleged that stones were thrown at her car in the presence of police.

She said, "If the bricks had hit me, I could have died. If the car windows had not been closed, my head would have been smashed. I could have lost my life. I have never faced such an attack in my life."

The former West Bengal Chief Minister also expressed anger over the role of the police. She alleged that police did not provide her with adequate security during the attack.

Mamata said, "Police did nothing to protect us. They only protect the BJP."

Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen, who were with her, also criticised the administration's role. Kalyan Banerjee alleged that Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari was using the police to create trouble.

However, the BJP has denied any involvement in the attack on Mamata's car. State BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya condemned the incident and said the BJP was not involved. He also called on police to take action against those responsible for the attack.
