British Columbia declares emergency as 100+ wildfires rage

British Columbia has declared a provincial state of emergency as more than 100 wildfires rage across the Canadian province, forcing more than 21,000 people from their homes and threatening communities amid rapidly deteriorating conditions.

The emergency was declared Saturday afternoon (August 8) as authorities struggled to contain fires spreading across multiple parts of the province.

Officials said about 21,700 people have been displaced, while another 9,700 remain under evacuation alerts.

The crisis intensified Friday night when the Bald Range wildfire surged toward Summerland, prompting authorities to order all 12,000 residents of the district to evacuate immediately.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said many residents had lost their homes and property, while others remained stranded as conditions continued to change.

“Those affected are not alone. The people of British Columbia are standing with you,” Eby said at a news conference Saturday.

Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Minister Kelly Greene said the declaration gives the province additional legal powers needed to respond rapidly without bureaucratic delays.

Authorities could use those powers to secure temporary accommodation and impose travel restrictions in affected areas if necessary, Greene said. She also urged travelers to check emergency notices and road conditions before entering wildfire-affected regions.

The wildfire situation worsened rapidly after one blaze was first reported Friday evening. Within hours, it had spread across roughly 50 square kilometers and completely engulfed the small community of Foulds, according to officials.

Videos shared on social media showed residents fleeing as homes were consumed by flames. Long lines of vehicles carrying evacuees were reported on southern routes toward Penticton, underscoring the scale of the mass evacuation.

Officials have warned that conditions remain volatile and that evacuation orders and alerts may change quickly as firefighters battle the fires.
