British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns
Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the UK's ruling Labour Party and as Prime Minister, stating he will continue to serve until a new leader is elected.
In an emotional statement outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, June 22, Starmer said questions had been raised about his party's confidence in his ability to lead them into the next general election. He said he had received the answer to that question and had decided to step down with dignity.
Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and called on the Labour Party's National Executive Committee (NEC) to begin the process of electing a new leader as soon as possible.
According to party sources, nominations for the leadership will open on July 9, with the process expected to be completed before parliament's summer recess. If there is a contest, a new leader will be elected by September; if there is no challenger, the transition could be completed within July.
Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, returning the party to power after 14 years. However, disappointing results in recent local elections, declining popularity and growing discontent within the party had put pressure on his leadership. In recent weeks, several ministers and MPs publicly called for his resignation.
Starmer also highlighted the achievements of his government, including economic growth, wage increases, reducing NHS waiting lists and strengthening the UK's role in international diplomacy.
Former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is seen as the leading contender to succeed Starmer, though several other senior Labour figures are also being discussed.
Starmer will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new leader is elected.
