Broad Peak avalanche: Nirmal Purja among 10 climbers missing in Pakistan

Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja is among at least 10 climbers reported missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak (8,051 metres) in Pakistan's Karakoram range.

The incident took place around noon on Thursday (July 30), when an avalanche swept through the section between Camp 2 and Camp 3 at an altitude of approximately 6,600 metres, severing all communication with the climbers.

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the missing include Nirmal Purja, five Sherpa guides and climbers from the United States, China, Oman and Pakistan. Rescue efforts were initially delayed due to severe weather, which prevented helicopters from reaching the site immediately after the avalanche.

On Friday morning, the Pakistan Air Force dispatched a special rescue helicopter from Skardu, while ground rescue teams simultaneously began searching from the base camp. However, officials said the operation remains extremely challenging because of the treacherous terrain, unstable snow conditions and adverse weather.

Meanwhile, The Kathmandu Post reported that data from Purja's GPS tracking device indicated slight movement in his recorded location after the avalanche. Although rescuers cautioned that the signal does not confirm he is alive, it has provided a glimmer of hope as search operations continue.

Authorities said rescue teams are continuing intensive efforts to locate the missing climbers, while closely monitoring weather conditions to support the ongoing operation.
