BSCL becomes member of international space-based climate observatory

Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has obtained membership of the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO), an international space-based climate monitoring organisation. At the same time, the company has also received official recognition as Bangladesh's National Focal Point. Bangladesh's inclusion in this international alliance, led by the French space agency CNES, is being seen as a significant advancement for the country's space technology and climate research.

According to a BSCL press release, an Expression of Interest was sent to the organisation on December 8 last year following approval from the Posts and Telecommunications Division. Subsequently, based on the decision of the SCO Steering Committee, Bangladesh was granted membership and recognition as the National Focal Point .

Established in 2019 under the initiative of the French government, the SCO is a global alliance of various space agencies, research institutions, universities and international organisations around the world . The organisation analyses satellite data, field-level information and local socio-economic data to monitor the impacts of climate change, generate forecasts and assist in policymaking. It also funds international climate research projects .

Currently, multiple projects funded by the SCO are ongoing in various countries, including France, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and Haiti. With their support, the 'BanD-SOS' project is also being implemented in Bangladesh. Through this project, immediate storm surge forecasts during cyclones, risk mapping and advance information on flood situations are being provided .

With its SCO membership, Bangladesh will now be able to participate more actively in satellite-based climate data, research, technology and innovative projects at the international level. This will create new opportunities for disaster risk reduction, environmental monitoring, enhancing climate resilience and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A formal signing ceremony is likely to be held in a dedicated session at the Space Summit in Paris, France, on September 9, where the formalities related to Bangladesh's membership will be completed .

BSCL Managing Director and CEO Dr Imadul Rahman said this membership is not only a significant international recognition for BSCL but also for Bangladesh's space technology and climate diplomacy. According to him, this will create new opportunities for research, technology exchange, capacity building and the use of satellite-based climate data, which will further strengthen Bangladesh's ability to tackle the challenges of climate change .
