Canada secured a historic milestone at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, defeating South Africa 1-0 with a dramatic stoppage-time goal by Stephen Eustáquio to advance to the Round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time. Having previously exited in the group stages during their 1986 and 2022 campaigns, the co-hosts rewrote their footballing history in their third tournament appearance.

Canada maintained unrelenting attacking pressure throughout the match, but South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams repeatedly denied them with spectacular saves. In the 44th minute, a header from Moïse Bombito off an Eustáquio corner was cleared off the goal line by defender Aubrey Modiba, before Williams blocked Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up effort from the rebound. South Africa attempted to tactically manage the game by dictating possession to frustrate Canada’s offense, drawing visible annoyance from the stadium crowd.

In the 75th minute, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch substituted Buchanan for Alphonso Davies, who made his return from a hamstring injury that had kept him sidelined for the entirety of the group stage. Davies' arrival re-energized the stadium and immediately impacted the match. Shortly after coming on, Davies drew two defenders away to create space before a cross into the box was headed clear by a South African defender straight into the path of Eustáquio. The midfielder capitalized instantly, launching a right-footed volley into the back of the net in the second minute of added time to seal the victory.

Statistical data underlined Canada's dominance, with the hosts outshooting South Africa 14-6 overall and 7-2 on target. Although Bafana Bafana controlled 58 percent of the possession and registered an 86 percent passing accuracy, their attacking threat remained limited, yielding only a single corner throughout the match. Canada committed 15 fouls and picked up two yellow cards, while South Africa received none.

With this historic victory, Canada advances to the Round of 16 in Houston, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco. The return of Alphonso Davies provides a significant boost for the co-hosts as they enter the next stage of the tournament.
