Cape Verde, a small African island nation with a population of just over half a million, has written an incredible piece of history on the World Cup stage. Following a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay's simultaneous defeat to Spain, the Blue Sharks secured second place in Group H, advancing to the World Cup knockout rounds for the very first time.

Cape Verde had punched their maiden World Cup ticket on October 13 last year with a 3-0 victory over Eswatini. During the qualifiers, they were the smallest country by land area and one of the smallest by population to secure a spot in the tournament. They reached the world stage after topping their qualifying group in Africa ahead of continental powerhouses Cameroon.

The Blue Sharks caused their first major upset in their opening World Cup match by holding European giants Spain to a 0-0 draw. They followed that up with an even more dramatic performance against Uruguay. In the 21st minute of that match, Kevin Pina put Cape Verde ahead with a spectacular long-range free-kick—marking the nation's first-ever World Cup goal. Striking from 32 meters out, it stands as one of the longest-distance goals of the tournament.

Although Uruguay quickly mounted a comeback to lead 2-1 before the interval through Araujo and Canobbio, Hélio Varela capitalized on a goalkeeping error in the 61st minute to restore parity, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.

By remaining unbeaten in their opening two games, Cape Verde became the first debutant team since Senegal in 2002 to avoid defeat in their first two World Cup matches. They maintained that fierce competitive spirit in their final group fixture against Saudi Arabia.

During the match against the Saudis, Cape Verde registered 16 shots, with 3 on target. At the other end, goalkeeper Vozinha put on a solid display, successfully denying all three of Saudi Arabia's shots on target.

Cape Verde coach Bubista had previously stated that despite being a small nation, unity and fighting spirit make it possible to stand up to any footballing giant. On the World Cup stage, his team has proven exactly that.

With the Group H standings finalized, Spain tops the table with 7 points, while Cape Verde finishes second with 3 points. A monumental test now awaits the tiny island nation in the Round of 32, where the Blue Sharks are set to face Argentina. While a clash against the giants looms, Cape Verde has already authored one of the greatest fairy-tale stories in World Cup history.
