Cape Verde produced a stunning defensive performance to hold Spain to a 0–0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H opener at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, marking a dream debut on football’s biggest stage.

Despite Spain’s overwhelming dominance in possession and territory, the European giants were repeatedly frustrated by Cape Verde’s disciplined structure and an outstanding display from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vózinha.

Spain controlled around 70% possession in the first half and generated a significantly higher expected goals (xG), but failed to convert their superiority into a breakthrough. Cape Verde, meanwhile, offered minimal attacking threat but remained compact and organised throughout.

The best opportunity of the first half came late on when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar from close range following a delivery from Marc Cucurella, before Mikel Oyarzabal’s follow-up header was brilliantly saved by Vózinha to preserve the deadlock.

Earlier, Spain saw efforts from Rodri, Pedri and Fabián Ruiz denied, as Cape Verde’s defensive line blocked lanes and limited clear sights of goal. Defender Sidney Lopes Cabral also received an early booking in the 15th minute.

Spain increased their urgency after the break, introducing Lamine Yamal and Mikel Merino around the 70th minute in search of a breakthrough. Yamal’s introduction added attacking intensity, but Cape Verde’s defensive resilience continued to hold firm, with another crucial block denying Oyarzabal after a move involving Dani Olmo.

Statistically, Spain finished with an expected goals value of 1.73 compared to Cape Verde’s 0.41, and outshot their opponents 10–3, underlining their dominance without end product.

Vózinha emerged as the standout performer, making seven crucial saves, including key interventions at decisive moments to secure a famous clean sheet. The 40-year-old goalkeeper was central to Cape Verde’s resistance in what was their first-ever World Cup match.

The result marks a major early statement from Cape Verde, who fielded one of the oldest starting XIs in tournament history, with an average age of 31 years and 26 days. Their disciplined approach frustrated Spain, the world’s second-ranked side, who once again struggled to convert control into goals in a World Cup setting.

Spain now face added pressure in Group H after dropping points in their opening match. They will meet Saudi Arabia on June 21, while Cape Verde prepare for a challenging clash against Uruguay.
