Cape Verde's fairytale faces ultimate test against Argentina

Cape Verde's dream FIFA World Cup debut is set for its biggest test yet, as the African newcomers prepare to face reigning champions Argentina in the Round of 32.

After scripting one of the tournament's most remarkable stories, the tiny island nation now stands just one match away from another historic milestone. But to keep their fairytale alive, they must overcome a Lionel Messi-inspired and title favourite Argentina.

Argentina stormed through Group J with commanding victories over Algeria (3-0) and Austria (2-0), sealing top spot without conceding a single goal. The Albiceleste have combined defensive solidity with attacking brilliance, led once again by Messi.

The 38-year-old captain has enjoyed a record-breaking campaign, equalling Miroslav Klose's World Cup scoring mark with a hat-trick against Algeria before surpassing it with a brace against Austria. Messi now stands alone as the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 18 goals, while also becoming the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick and the first footballer to feature in six World Cups.

Cape Verde's journey has been a story of resilience and belief. With a population of just over 5,25,000, the Blue Sharks stunned African football by qualifying ahead of Cameroon before carrying that momentum onto the world stage.

They opened their campaign by holding Spain to a goalless draw, recovered from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, and secured another point against Saudi Arabia to book a historic place in the knockout stage.

In doing so, Cape Verde became the first World Cup debutant since Senegal in 2002 to remain unbeaten in their opening three matches—one of the standout stories of the tournament.

On paper, the gulf between the two sides is undeniable. Argentina are three-time world champions boasting stars such as Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, and Messi, while Cape Verde are tournament newcomers driven by discipline, unity and fearless determination.

Yet this World Cup has repeatedly shown that reputation alone guarantees nothing. Cape Verde have already defied expectations throughout their campaign, and they will believe another upset is possible when they face the defending champions.

Whether the Blue Sharks can extend their remarkable fairytale or Argentina's experience and quality prove decisive will be one of the most compelling storylines of the Round of 32.
