Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has urged domestic election observation organisations to act impartially and professionally to ensure a free and credible election. He said the role of observers is crucial for ensuring transparency in the election process.

On Tuesday, November 25, the CEC presided over a dialogue with leaders and representatives of domestic election observation bodies at the Election Commission building. Other commissioners and representatives of various observer organisations were present.

The CEC said, “We want to give the nation a fair, beautiful, neutral election. The Election Commission has only one agenda — a fair, proper and acceptable election. Whatever challenges arise, we want to accomplish this task. And we need your cooperation.”

Highlighting the importance of observers, he said their work will increase the confidence of voters and political parties and also send a positive message internationally.

The CEC warned the heads of observer organisations that their appointed personnel must never be biased. He said if observers act with political motivation, the entire image will be tarnished. He cautioned newer or less experienced organisations to be extremely careful when selecting their observers.

Clarifying the limit of observers’ roles, the CEC said their job is to observe, not intervene. “You cannot influence anyone, you cannot arrange the queue. You will only report and give recommendations at the appropriate time.”

He further said their reports must be impartial, professional and reflective of reality, which will help in future reforms of the election process. He urged observers to prepare their reports responsibly, considering Bangladesh’s political and social context.
