BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are set to contest head-to-head in the Chapainawabganj-4 Shibganj-1 constituency. Although BNP is considered ahead in this seat, local people say Jamaat will also remain in the race until the end.

However, residents say open discussions about voting are rarely heard at tea stalls or shops. Fear generated during previous elections under the Awami League has yet to fade from people’s minds. Many believe that even if a new side wins this time, it remains uncertain whether they will turn oppressive like past rulers. Locals fear that even a slip of the tongue could lead to mob attacks, harassment or cases that could shatter their lives and families. As a result, the area remains gripped by anxiety, and the once-lively tea cups of ordinary people now feel lukewarm.

BNP candidate and former whip Professor Md Shahjahan Mia said there has been an overwhelming response among voters. Expressing confidence, he said he is 100 per cent hopeful of victory with prayers and public support. He promised to prioritise education, healthcare, communication development and the protection of people’s fundamental rights. He added that his mission is not for exploiting religion or politics, but to guide people onto the right path, saying good deeds are always accompanied by divine support.

He further said people must come out of the culture of fear and speak the truth properly and clearly to everyone.

Dr Maulana Keramat Ali said all decisions ultimately come from Allah, adding that people have the ability to judge what is good or bad and will make their own decision.

Chapainawabganj Returning Officer, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md Shahadat Hossain Masud told Views Bangladesh that candidates are making various allegations and actions are being taken in line with rules. He said the district administration has completed all preparations and expects a fair election, with all measures in place including body cameras.

According to official data, the constituency has a total of 500,182 voters, including 255,316 men and 244,856 women. There is one municipality and 15 unions, covering an area of 525 square kilometres.
