Chelsea open talks to sign Emiliano Martinez

Chelsea have opened talks with Aston Villa over a move for Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to sources cited by ESPN.

Chelsea have also made an offer for the 32-year-old goalkeeper as they look to strengthen their options between the posts before the transfer window closes.

Martinez could replace Robert Sanchez, whose position has come under scrutiny following Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat by Fulham. Several mistakes by Sanchez in the match exposed vulnerabilities in Chelsea’s defence and prompted the club to consider bringing in a more experienced goalkeeper.

Chelsea had previously considered 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, as an alternative to Sanchez. However, Martinez’s Premier League experience and international pedigree have made him an increasingly attractive option.

Villa are understood to be open to Martinez’s departure after signing Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The club reportedly see Suzuki as a potential long-term No. 1 and are also looking to reduce the average age of their squad.

Martinez joined Villa from Arsenal for £17 million in 2020. Villa could now use his sale to raise funds while continuing to comply with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations.

The club have already been active in the transfer market, with Morgan Rogers reportedly set to join Chelsea for £117 million, while Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne are also edging towards exits.

Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said he expects Enzo Fernandez to be available for the match against Luton despite continued speculation over the midfielder’s future. Manchester City are interested in the Argentina international, but Chelsea have reportedly set an asking price of £120 million.

With the transfer deadline approaching, negotiations over Martinez could become one of the key late moves of the window.
