Chelsea sign Argentina midfielder Valentín Barco on seven-year deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international Valentín Barco from French club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract, continuing the club's aggressive squad rebuild ahead of the new season.

The 21-year-old becomes Chelsea's sixth signing of the summer transfer window, joining a growing list of arrivals that includes Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Emanuel Emegha, Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra.

Chelsea did not disclose the financial details of the transfer.

Barco is expected to link up with Enzo Maresca's squad immediately for the club's pre-season preparations and could make his unofficial debut in the friendly against Juventus in Hong Kong on August 5.

The Argentine midfielder has already gained international experience, making an appearance for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the defending champions finished runners-up after losing the final to Spain. During the tournament, Barco also drew attention following an on-field altercation with England midfielder Jude Bellingham in the semi-finals.

A product of the renowned Boca Juniors academy, Barco joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2024 before moving on loan to Strasbourg, where his impressive performances convinced the Ligue 1 club to secure him on a permanent transfer.

His move to Stamford Bridge marks another transaction between Chelsea and Strasbourg, two clubs owned by the BlueCo consortium, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Since the partnership began, the two clubs have completed 13 player transfers, reflecting their increasingly integrated sporting strategy.

Chelsea view Barco as one of South America's brightest young prospects and another long-term investment as the club continues to build a youthful squad capable of competing for major honours.
