Chelsea thrashes PSG 3-0 to win first Club World Cup title
Chelsea have emerged as Club World Cup champions for the first time, dominating French giants PSG 3-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night (July 13).
Chelsea put on a clinical performance, with captain Reece James issuing a subtle warning to PSG before the game, saying, "We are not Real Madrid," hinting at PSG's potential 4-0 win over Spanish side. Chelsea's play proved far from threatening, as they thwarted PSG's attack and dominated throughout.
In the first half, PSG's midfield and frontline stifled, Chelsea struck twice in the opening 30 minutes. English midfielder Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, followed by another goal just eight minutes later. Palmer's brilliance continued, providing an assist for Brazilian striker Joao Pedro in the 43rd minute, effectively sealing PSG's fate and the title for Chelsea.
Chelsea's victory breaks a nearly decade-long trend where the Champions League winners have consistently claimed the Club World Cup. This is Chelsea's first-ever Club World Cup win, marking a historic achievement for the Blues in the new tournament format.
PSG, under Luis Enrique, were unable to create significant chances, with the Chelsea midfield duo of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez proving too effective.
