Formal charges have been framed against eight members of an alleged 'grooming gang' accused of child sexual exploitation in the United Kingdom. Among the accused, three are of Bangladeshi origin. A total of 34 charges, including 17 counts of rape, have been brought against them.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of England and Wales authorized the charges based on the long-term investigation named 'Operation Oak.' The investigation was initiated following allegations from several women who stated that they fell victim to sexual exploitation by the members of this ring during their childhood.

According to the investigation, the incidents described in the allegations took place between 1985 and 1996. It was noted that the accused were also minors at the time of the alleged offenses. The cases are being investigated by the UK's Gwent Police.

Reports from British media indicate that the eight individuals were detained on July 14 during operations conducted across Lancashire, Newport, Swansea, London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Argyll and Bute in Scotland. They were later granted bail on the condition that they appear before the Newport Magistrates' Court on July 24.

Gwent Police stated that the accused are aged between 54 and 73 years, and all of them are British citizens.

The three Bangladeshi-origin accused are Mohammad Sheikh Abdul Hannan, 54, Sheikh Mohammed Tahir Ullah, 73, and Aminur Rahman Chowdhury, 58.

Among them, Abdul Hannan faces two charges of raping a woman aged 16 or over, sexual assault, three counts of aiding and abetting rape, and two counts of conspiracy to rape.

Tahir Ullah faces charges of raping a woman and a young girl. Aminur Rahman Chowdhury has been charged with the rape of a woman.

The other five accused are Shakil Babar, Shafaq Ahmed, Ashan Taqvi, Murad Ali, and Kevin Lawrence. Except for Kevin, the remaining four are of Pakistani origin.

Shafaq Ahmed faces charges of seven counts of raping a woman and a young girl, aiding and abetting rape, and causing prostitution. Ashan Taqvi is charged with three counts of raping a young girl, while Murad Ali faces two counts of raping a young girl. Kevin Lawrence faces charges of conspiracy to rape and causing prostitution.

Gwent Police Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Tork stated that 'Operation Oak' is a complex and long-term investigation into organized child sexual exploitation in South Wales. He noted that with the cooperation of the CPS, the investigation has now reached a significant stage, enabling charges to be brought against the eight individuals.

He added that the primary focus of the investigation is to support the victims and ensure a fair judicial process. Consequently, he urged the public not to share any information on social media that could potentially influence the court proceedings.
