China optimistic on Teesta project, CMBC implementation: Envoy

China has expressed optimism over the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan, the China–Myanmar–Bangladesh Economic Corridor (CMBC) and several other joint development initiatives, reaffirming its commitment to deepening strategic cooperation with Bangladesh.

Speaking at the Comparative Governance Forum 2026 jointly organised at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) on Monday (August 3), Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said Beijing is committed to expanding bilateral cooperation across infrastructure, connectivity and development.

The ambassador described Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to China in June as a major milestone in Bangladesh-China relations, saying the two countries had reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership.

"We are working together to make the next 50 years the 'golden era' of Bangladesh-China relations," Yao said.

He noted that several flagship projects—including the Integrated Teesta Master Plan, the modernisation of Mongla Port, and the China–Myanmar–Bangladesh Economic Corridor (CMBC)—have been identified as priorities and expressed confidence that they would be implemented in phases.

Also addressing the event, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Humayun Kabir described China as one of Bangladesh's most trusted friends and an important development partner.

He said both countries have undertaken a range of initiatives to expand cooperation, expressing confidence that their implementation would elevate bilateral relations to a new level.

The programme was opened with welcome remarks by BIISS Director General Major General A S M Ridwanur Rahman and attended by policymakers, diplomats, academics and representatives from various institutions.
