China or Russia could occupy Greenland if US fails: Trump

US President Donald Trump has stated that if the United States does not take control of Greenland, China or Russia could occupy the island.

He also emphasized that he will not allow such a situation under any circumstances.

On Monday (January 12), news agency TASS reported that during a conversation with journalists, Trump said, “If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will. I will not let that happen.”

He added, “By any means, Greenland will be ours. According to me, the easiest way to transfer control of the island to Washington is through an agreement.”

Earlier, Donald Trump had repeatedly expressed interest in linking Greenland with the United States. During his first term, he had even proposed buying the island. Later, in March 2025, he confidently stated that it would be possible to integrate the region with the United States.

It is worth noting that Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Denmark and the United States signed a defense agreement outside NATO. Under this agreement, the responsibility to “protect” Greenland from potential aggression is entrusted to the United States.
