China sees 'ray of hope' for ending Iran war
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said a 'ray of hope' is emerging for resolving the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel. Although Iran remains in a position to continue fighting, China believes new opportunities for dialogue are taking shape.
During recent phone conversations with the foreign ministers of Turkey and Egypt, Wang Yi emphasised the need for a diplomatic solution. He indicated that signals are emerging from both the US and Iran indicating a willingness to return to talks.
In a discussion with Egypt's foreign minister on March 25, Wang Yi said a faint possibility for peace has emerged due to the interest shown by both sides.
However, shortly after China's remarks, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented a different position. He said no direct talks have taken place so far, and engaging in negotiations under the current circumstances would be akin to accepting defeat.
Meanwhile, the White House has warned that if Iran does not accept the peace plan, US President Donald Trump is prepared to take tough measures. Tehran has made it clear, however, that it is not interested in engaging in any talks at this time.
Trump, on the other hand, has claimed that Iran is secretly engaged in talks and is interested in reaching a deal, but is afraid to admit it publicly.
