China to host 2027 BRICS Summit, announces Xi

China will assume the rotating BRICS presidency and host the group’s 19th annual summit in 2027, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the close of the bloc’s summit in New Delhi on Saturday (September 12).

Xi made the announcement during the closing session of the 18th BRICS Summit, prompting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to congratulate him on China’s upcoming presidency.

Footage released by India’s Ministry of External Affairs showed the two leaders exchanging greetings.

The Chinese Embassy in India and state-run Xinhua news agency confirmed Xi’s announcement. The host city and dates for next year’s summit have yet to be announced.

India hosted this year’s two-day summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, bringing together leaders from the 11 BRICS member states, along with representatives of partner countries and international organisations.

Opening the summit, Modi described BRICS as an increasingly important force in global affairs and called for an ambitious agenda for the bloc’s next two decades.

Under India’s chairmanship, the summit focused heavily on the Global South, including efforts to strengthen food, energy and supply-chain security and help developing economies withstand economic pressures linked to global conflicts.
