Chinese Maglev train sets new world record reaching 800 KM/H in 5.3 seconds
An experimental maglev train in China has set a new world record by accelerating from zero to 800 kilometers per hour in just 5.3 seconds. Researchers claim that this breakthrough could play a vital role in the development of ultra-high-speed transportation technology.
The test was conducted on a one-kilometer-long experimental track at the Donghu Laboratory in China's Hubei province, using a train weighing 1.1 tons. During the trial, the vehicle achieved its target speed from a stationary position in a matter of 5.3 seconds.
Maglev technology uses magnetic force to levitate the train slightly above the track, resulting in almost no friction between the train and the tracks. Magnetic waves generated from coils surrounding the track propel the train forward.
Beyond achieving high speed, the braking system played a critical role in the experiment. After reaching 800 kilometers per hour, the advanced braking system brought the train to a complete stop within a distance of approximately 200 meters.
This marks the third major test of the same technology over the past six months, with each trial breaking previous records. In the first test held last June, the train reached nearly 650 kilometers per hour in 7 seconds. Subsequent tests hit speeds of roughly 700 kilometers per hour and later 798 kilometers per hour, before the latest trial crossed the 800-kilometer threshold.
According to a report by China's state broadcaster CCTV, each test rigorously evaluated high-power electricity supply, electromagnetic propulsion, high-speed levitation control systems, and emergency braking technology.
Currently, commercial maglev trains operating in China and Japan reach speeds of about 320 kilometers per hour, presenting a major contrast to the 800-kilometer speed achieved in the new test.
Researchers at China's National University of Defense Technology are also working on ultra-high-speed maglev technology. In one of their tests, a train reached 697 kilometers per hour in just 2 seconds.
However, this experimental train running at 800 kilometers per hour is not yet being deployed for passenger transport. Researchers suggest that its underlying technology could eventually be utilized to build special high-speed launch systems for rockets and fighter jets.
Chinese scientists are continuing research on even more advanced maglev technologies. One potential system involves operating trains inside low-pressure or near-vacuum tubes, which could reduce air resistance and unlock even higher speeds.
Nevertheless, several significant challenges remain before this technology can be adapted for human travel, including massive infrastructural costs, ensuring passenger safety, and the complexities of constructing and controlling extremely precise long-distance tracks.
