Chinese scientists have identified a previously unknown mineral on the Moon, a breakthrough researchers say could have significant implications for next-generation LED technology.

According to the China Geological Survey, the mineral—named cerium–magnesium changesite—was discovered during analysis of a lunar meteorite recovered on Earth.

Experts are describing the finding as a major milestone in space geology.

The newly identified mineral is colorless, transparent and brittle, with grain sizes measuring less than 10 micrometers. Researchers noted its unusual physical properties, particularly a distinctive fluorescence effect, which could be key to advanced technological applications.

Scientists believe the mineral formed under extreme temperature and pressure conditions on the Moon, offering new insights into lunar geological processes. Its unique composition may also help researchers better understand how elements like cerium and magnesium interact in extraterrestrial environments.

The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names said the mineral’s fluorescent characteristics make it a promising candidate for use in more efficient and cost-effective LED production. It could also enhance the performance of synthetic materials currently used in electronic devices.

Beyond industrial applications, the discovery is expected to deepen scientific understanding of the Moon’s formation and its geological links with Earth, opening new avenues for future research in planetary science.
