Clashes between police and fans in Buenos Aires, 15 arrested

Clashes broke out between police and angry fans in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires following the team's defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. At least 15 people were arrested in the incident, with several fans and police officers injured.

The FIFA World Cup final, held in New Jersey on Sunday, went into extra time. Spain won the match 1-0 with a solitary goal from Ferran Torres to become world champions for the second time.

Thousands of fans had gathered on the streets of Buenos Aires to watch the match. After the final whistle, the frustration of many turned into violence.

Tension began to build around the 67.5-metre-high national monument Obelisk in the city centre at around 11:45pm local time on Sunday. When some fans attempted to climb over security barriers onto the monument, the situation quickly spiralled out of control.

A section of angry fans began throwing glass bottles and other objects at police. Officers used tear gas shells, water cannons and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

In the clash, which lasted about 20 minutes, seven police officers were injured. Several fans were also hurt, including a man who suffered serious facial injuries after being kicked by a fan, and a woman who was also injured. Police arrested at least 15 people.

Unpleasant scenes also unfolded on the pitch after the match. Several Argentina players, frustrated by the loss, were involved in scuffles with Spain players, resulting in red cards for Leandro Paredes and Enzo Fernandez. During the trophy presentation, some Argentina players were seen turning their backs on their opponents.

Despite the disappointing defeat, Argentine President Javier Milei has declared a one-day public holiday. He has left it to the players to choose which date the holiday will be observed. Meanwhile, the victorious Spanish team will return to Madrid on Monday and, after receiving a reception from King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, will hold an open-top bus victory parade.
