Coach Thomas Dooley wants team to play football, not chase the ball
New Bangladesh national football team head coach Thomas Dooley has outlined his football philosophy, saying he wants his players to control possession and dictate matches rather than spend their time chasing the ball.
Dooley, who was appointed as Bangladesh's head coach earlier this month, spoke to the media for the first time on Saturday following a training session ahead of the team's departure for San Marino on Sunday night.
The former United States international and Bundesliga star said his preferred style is based on possession and positional play.
“I have told the players clearly that I like to play football,” Dooley said. “The foundation of my philosophy is that we do not run after the ball. Instead, we keep possession and put pressure on our opponents. I am most comfortable with positional football in a 4-2-3-1 formation.”
The coach stressed the importance of mastering football's basic skills, including passing and receiving, to successfully implement his system.
“To make this work, our passing and receiving must be close to perfect. Every player must remain fully focused and understand his role on the field,” he said.
Dooley also highlighted the importance of coordinated pressing in modern football, noting that every player must contribute for the system to function effectively.
“In modern football, pressing requires the entire team to work together. If even one midfielder fails to press properly, the whole plan can collapse. The players need to understand and internalize that concept,” he said.
The American coach revealed that he is using video analysis to help players identify mistakes and improve their decision-making.
“We record training sessions and then review them with the players on screen. We show them what they should have done in specific situations. By repeatedly highlighting these moments, we hope they will make better and more confident decisions in future matches,” Dooley explained.
Addressing questions about why he chose to coach Bangladesh despite an accomplished playing and coaching career, Dooley said he saw potential in the team and believed his methods could help the players improve.
“I have won championships in different divisions, played in the World Cup and received many honors. After retiring, I wanted to pass on what helped me succeed. I watched videos of Bangladesh's matches and felt that what I teach is exactly what this team needs. I want to help them become successful,” he said.
Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuyan said the players are adapting to the new coach's ideas and have already had several discussions with him.
“He is working very hard. We have meetings, one-on-one conversations, and detailed explanations. A new coach brings new ideas, and we are continuing to discuss them,” Jamal said.
According to the captain, Dooley has placed particular emphasis on improving the team's defensive organization and reducing avoidable mistakes that lead to goals.
“He has shown us through analysis how we have been conceding goals. He doesn't like giving away silly goals. He also wants us to improve our passing and pressing. Since he was a defender himself, he has extensive knowledge about defending, which is very helpful for our defenders,” Jamal added.
Bangladesh are set to continue preparations under Dooley before beginning their upcoming international campaign.
