The 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a brutal three-day stretch for the tournament's host nations. In a devastating sequence during the Round of 16, all three co-hosts—Canada, Mexico, and the United States—were knocked out of the competition after encountering superior opponents.

Canada

Canada’s historic World Cup run came to an end with a 3-0 defeat against Morocco. Despite the loss, the tournament was widely considered a groundbreaking success for the program, as Canada reached the Round of 16 for the first time in its history. Facing a highly disciplined and structured Moroccan side, the Canadian squad struggled to find its rhythm offensively and was ultimately picked apart, leaving the tournament with its best-ever finish but a clear indication of the gap that remains to elite international levels.

Mexico

Mexico’s campaign was cut short following a dramatic 3-2 loss to England. After navigating a flawless group stage where they finished at the top of Group A with three consecutive wins and zero goals conceded, El Tri faced a much sterner test in the knockout stage. In a highly competitive, back-and-forth match, the Mexican side pushed England to the brink but was undone by defensive lapses late in the game, marking another disappointing exit at the first knockout phase.

United States

The United States Men's National Team suffered the most lopsided exit of the trio, falling 4-1 to Belgium at Seattle Stadium. The Americans, who had cruised through the early stages of the tournament, looked uncharacteristically nervous and committed a series of severe individual defensive errors. Although a first-half free kick from Malik Tillman briefly leveled the score, Belgium answered back almost immediately. Second-half blunders and a clinical Belgian counter-attack completely buried the U.S. hopes, leaving the final host nation out of the tournament.
