College principal arrested over alleged Awami League links despite no pending case
The principal of Bagharpara Upazila Mahila Degree College in Jessore, Azgor Ali, has been arrested by police. His family claims he was detained based on alleged affiliation with the Awami League, even though there is no pending case against him.
He was arrested from his home in Ramkantapur village of Bagharpara upazila around 3:00 am on Tuesday, June 9.
Family members said Azgor Ali was a former member of the Jessore district committee of the banned Awami League.
Azgor Ali's brother, Abdul Hannan, alleged that police came to the house at night to detain him. Although the family requested that they come back in the morning, police did not comply. He claimed that police attempted to break doors and windows to enter the house, and when Azgor Ali opened the door and came out, he was taken away.
The family said he is currently not a member of any district or upazila committee of Awami League, and there is no pending case against him. When they asked for the reason for the arrest, police did not give a clear answer.
However, Bagharpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahjalal Alam said Azgor Ali is being shown as arrested in an old sabotage case and is being produced in court. But it is known that his name is not mentioned in the charge sheet of that case.
The OC also said police attempted to open the door as the principal did not open it for a long time, but he denied allegations of vandalism with weapons or using foul language.
The incident has sparked discussion and criticism in the area, with the family questioning the legality of the arrest and the basis of the case.
