Colombia earthquake death toll rises to 181

The death toll from a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia has risen to 181, with at least 1,310 people injured, authorities said Tuesday (August 11).

The earthquake, which struck Monday, caused widespread destruction across several cities, collapsing at least 153 buildings and forcing six airports to suspend operations for safety reasons.

The Association of Colombian Capital Cities, or Asocapitales, confirmed the latest casualty figures.

Colombia President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a nationwide state of emergency after officials reported that at least 200 people remained missing. Initial assessments indicated that more than 1,100 homes had been destroyed and over 8,000 damaged.

Rescue teams are continuing to search collapsed buildings for survivors, but frequent aftershocks have hampered operations. More than 70 aftershocks have been recorded since the main quake, according to the Colombian Geological Service.

Aid collection centres have been opened in Quibdo, Pereira, Manizales, Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla, Cali and Ibague to support affected communities.

Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue crews reach areas still cut off and search debris for missing people. A coordinated platform is also being prepared to help identify those still unaccounted for.
