Colombia's Campaz receives death threats for World Cup miss
Colombian forward Haminton Campaz has said he is receiving death threats after missing a crucial goal in the World Cup, revealing that a single miss can make life unbearable.
Taking to Instagram, Campaz confirmed the threats and wrote, "Tough moments come in football. Dear Colombia, please never lose respect. Our opinions may differ or we may feel frustration and sadness, but no emotion justifies spreading hatred or living in fear."
The Colombian Football Federation has stood by Campaz and called for a swift investigation. "It is unacceptable to threaten any player or their family for representing the country," they said, urging fans not to turn on-field disappointments into real-life violence.
Campaz missed a golden chance in the 115th minute against Switzerland, shooting over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat. Colombia lost the match 4-3 on penalties. He did score his spot-kick in the shootout, but it was not enough.
The incident echoes the 1994 tragedy when defender Andres Escobar was shot dead after scoring an own goal that led to Colombia's elimination from the World Cup.
