Common mistakes in storing Qurbani meat that increase spoilage risk
Proper storage of Qurbani meat becomes a major household task during Eid, but experts say recurring mistakes often lead to spoilage, unpleasant odours, or freezer malfunctions in many homes.
They note that most problems arise from a lack of planning and simple errors in handling meat right after sacrifice. With proper preparation and method, these issues can easily be avoided.
One of the most common mistakes is failing to clean and organise the freezer ahead of Eid. Old frozen food and unnecessary items often take up space, creating sudden storage shortages when fresh meat arrives. Experts recommend clearing and cleaning the freezer at least one to two days before Eid.
Another frequent mistake is placing freshly cut meat directly into the freezer. This can raise the internal temperature of the appliance and affect other stored items. It is safer to let the meat cool slightly before packaging and freezing.
Overcrowding the freezer is also a major issue. When meat is stored too tightly, cold air cannot circulate properly, leading to uneven freezing and increased risk of spoilage, while also putting extra strain on the cooling system.
Many households also mix different types of meat—such as minced meat, liver, and bone-in cuts—without separation, making it difficult to identify portions later. Experts advise categorising and labelling each packet for easier use.
Using thin plastic bags is another common error, as they can stick to ice or tear easily inside the freezer, causing leakage and contamination risks. Heavy-duty, food-grade or zip-lock bags are recommended instead.
Improper packaging shape is also a concern. Bulky or unevenly packed portions take longer to freeze and consume more space. Flat, evenly divided packets help ensure faster freezing and better storage efficiency.
Failure to manage leakage inside the freezer can also lead to hygiene issues and unpleasant odours. Experts suggest using trays, liners, or newspapers beneath stored meat to make cleaning easier.
Finally, frequent opening of the freezer during Eid increases temperature fluctuations, slowing down the freezing process. Keeping frequently used packets in accessible positions can help reduce unnecessary handling.
Experts emphasise that with basic awareness and proper planning, households can keep Qurbani meat safe, fresh, and well-preserved for a longer period.
