Defending champions Argentina and Switzerland, who have reached the quarter-finals after 72 years, are set to face off in a high-voltage World Cup clash. FIFA has announced the match officials for the fixture at Kansas City Stadium, with three Portuguese referees taking charge amid various refereeing controversies this tournament.

Joao Pinheiro, the 47-year-old Portuguese referee, will be the main official. He is officiating his first World Cup this year. He handled the Switzerland-Bosnia group match (which Switzerland won 4-1), showing three yellow cards and a red card, as well as the Canada-South Africa Round of 16 match. This will be his first time refereeing an Argentina match.

Pinheiro has 421 matches in his career, with 1,886 yellow cards and 139 red cards—an average of 4.48 yellow cards per match.

He is an experienced UEFA official, having taken charge of the 2022-23 UEFA Super Cup final between PSG and Tottenham, among other major matches. However, he was at the centre of controversy during the Champions League semi-final second leg between Bayern Munich and PSG when he denied Bayern a penalty after a handball by Joao Neves, with no VAR intervention.

Pinheiro will be assisted by compatriots Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia, with Canada's Drew Fischer as the fourth official.
