Criticism after female student allocated in male hall list at JU
Classes for first-year students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) for the 2024–25 academic year are due to begin next Sunday (September 21). Class rolls, registration numbers and residential hall allocations have already been completed.
However, a severe controversy has erupted over a list published by the authorities of Hall No. 10. The list shows that in Room 138, alongside three male students, a female student named Jubaida Nahri Juthi has also been allocated. When the matter spread on social media, netizens responded with ridicule and a storm of criticism.
Sharing the photo of the list, one person named Nahid Hasan Nipu wrote, “What kind of allotment is this?”
In the comments, Nahidul Islam added, “The university authorities have placed her in the boys’ row!”
Mockingly, Saifur Rahman Saif wrote: “How did they realise she is a female? Is a name somebody’s allocation? Why discriminate? It might even be that she thinks herself a boy in her heart!”
However, a university notice clarified that Jubaida Nahri Juthi has actually been allocated Begum Khaleda Zia Hall.
When asked about the matter, Professor Mohammad Rezaul Rakib, provost of Hall No. 10, said it could be a clerical error. “We are examining the issue,” he said.
On the other hand, the university’s deputy registrar (Education), Mohammad Ali Reza, said there is no error in the list published on the university website. He added that discrepancies have occurred in the hall administration’s published list for room allocation.
