Croatia secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Panama to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout ambitions in a tense Group L battle at Toronto Stadium.

The momentous match marked a legendary milestone for captain Luka Modrić, who officially became the first Croatian player to earn 200 international caps. Desperate for points after opening defeats, both teams delivered an immensely physical and cagey first-half performance.

Panama looked incredibly dangerous on counter-attacks, exposing spaces out wide through full-back Michael Amir Murillo. The Central Americans came agonizingly close to scoring in the 30th minute when José Luis Rodríguez connected with a dangerous header, which was brilliantly pushed onto the woodwork by Croatian keeper Dominik Livaković.

Finding his midfield structure heavily disrupted, Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić gambled with an aggressive double substitution during the halftime interval. The tactical adjustment reaped immediate rewards in the 54th minute when substitute Josip Stanišić drove to the byline and delivered a precise low cross across the face of goal.

Fellow halftime substitute Ante Budimir reacted quickest, coolly tapping the ball past Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera at the back post to break the deadlock. Minutes later, Croatia missed a golden opportunity to double their advantage when a sublime pass from Modrić sent Mario Pašalić clean through, only for his chipped effort to sail over the crossbar.

Refusing to back down, Thomas Christiansen’s Panamanian side committed bodies forward and threw everything at the European heavyweights in a frantic final twenty minutes. Livaković produced a magnificent string of back-to-back saves in the 70th minute, spectacularly denying Murillo's rebound before tipping Carlos Harvey's point-blank header over the bar.

Tensions flared as the clock ticked down, prompting the referee to issue yellow cards to Panama's Yoel Bárcenas and Croatia's Petar Sučić for reckless tactical challenges.

Croatia successfully absorbed the late onslaught to see out a vital victory, moving to third place in Group L with three points. Panama remains at the bottom of the group after consecutive losses and faces a monumental task ahead of their final group stage fixture.
