Crude oil prices exceeds $100 as Middle East war rages
Global oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel, reaching their highest levels in nearly four years amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
According to a report by BBC, Brent crude rose to $108.68 per barrel on Sunday, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) reached $108, marking sharp increases of 18 per cent and 20 per cent respectively from the previous day.
Energy market analysts said the sharp rise is linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, where sanctions and military activity involving Iran have disrupted the movement of oil tankers.
Following the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued warnings to vessels in the strait, and several oil tankers have reportedly been attacked.
Data from UK Maritime Trade Operations shows at least 10 tanker incidents have been reported since February 28.
Oil prices last crossed the $100 mark in early 2022 after the start of the Russia–Ukraine war.
