World Cup debutants Curaçao have stunned Germany by striking back to level the score at 1-1 in the 20th minute of their historic Group E opening match at NRG Stadium.

Midfielder Livano Comenencia scored the historic equalizer, capitalising on a sudden shift in momentum just 14 minutes after Germany had taken an early lead.

The match had initially looked to be going according to script for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Germany broke the deadlock in the 6th minute through a moment of individual and tactical brilliance from Felix Nmecha, who smoothly combined with Florian Wirtz to slot a curling 17-yard finish into the far side-netting.

Despite trailing early against the four-time world champions, Curaçao refused to falter on their maiden World Cup appearance. Showing the tactical resilience instilled by veteran manager Dick Advocaat, the Caribbean nation began generating threatening counters, eventually finding their breakthrough at the 20-minute mark when Comenencia beat Manuel Neuer to trigger ecstatic celebrations from the tournament underdogs.

The unexpected equalizer leaves the powerhouse German squad searching for answers as they try to regain control of the midfield and avoid a major opening-day upset.
