Curfew lifted as Nepal returns to normalcy
Nepal has lifted the curfew imposed during the recent Gen Z movement and government crisis. Following the swearing-in of Sushila Karki as the head of the interim government, authorities have withdrawn all curfews and restrictions.
The Nepali Army had initially enforced the curfew until 6am on Saturday. With the restrictions lifted, public transportation services have resumed, and long-distance buses have departed from the capital, Kathmandu, to various regions across the country.
Friday evening saw several vehicles leave Gangaabu Bus Park, marking a noticeable return of traffic and pedestrian activity throughout the Kathmandu Valley.
President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath to Sushila Karki during a special ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas on Friday night. The Gen Z movement, which protested against social media shutdowns and government corruption, had taken to the streets demanding the dissolution of parliament and the formation of a neutral interim government following the fall of the previous administration.
As Nepal’s first female Prime Minister, Karki’s interim government is tasked with organizing parliamentary elections within six months and ensuring a smooth transfer of power to the elected government. Officials report that the country’s security situation is steadily returning to normal.
