Daily habits behind hair loss, experts reveal
Hereditary factors, hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies are most often discussed as causes of hair loss. However, experts say several common daily habits play an equally significant role. The problem worsens during hot and humid weather, causing many to suffer from hair issues. To keep hair healthy, it is essential to know which habits are silently damaging it.
Tight hairstyles
Many tie their hair tightly for comfort during hot weather, while others keep it in a tight ponytail or braid for most of the day. Though it may look neat temporarily, it puts constant pressure on the hair roots. Over time, roots weaken, leading to breakage or hair fall. In medical terms, this is called traction alopecia, caused by prolonged tight hairstyles.
Experts advise being mindful not to pull hair too tightly when tying it. Soft fabric ties or silicone-coated bands are safer alternatives to tight rubber bands. Additionally, keeping hair loose occasionally rather than tying it tightly every day is beneficial for hair roots.
Irregular washing
Many avoid washing their hair regularly due to busy schedules or laziness. This allows sweat, dust, excess oil and dead cells to accumulate on the scalp. Over time, these build up at the roots, weakening them and causing dandruff, itching and inflammation.
According to experts, the scalp sweats and becomes oilier in hot and humid weather, so it is necessary to keep it clean several times a week. Choosing the right shampoo according to scalp type is also important.
Neglecting wet hair
Hair is at its softest and most fragile state right after washing. Rubbing vigorously with a towel or hurriedly detangling can easily cause breakage. Instead of providing care, this habit causes damage.
Experts recommend gently patting wet hair dry with a soft cotton towel or microfiber cloth. When combing, one should start by detangling the ends first and then slowly work upwards. Using a wide-toothed comb reduces the risk of hair breakage.
Applying heat to wet hair
Many start using heat tools like hair dryers or straighteners immediately after washing. However, applying heat to wet hair causes natural moisture to evaporate quickly, leaving hair dry and brittle. Continuing this habit over time increases the risk of hair loss.
Experts advise applying heat only after hair has completely air-dried. If absolutely necessary, using a heat protectant spray at the lowest temperature setting is safer.
Excessive oil use
Many apply excessive oil to the scalp overnight, believing it nourishes the hair. However, during hot weather, excess oil mixes with sweat and dirt, clogging hair follicles. This increases the risk of scalp inflammation, rashes or itching, which indirectly accelerates hair fall.
Experts recommend using oil in moderation and washing it off after a few hours rather than leaving it overnight. During hot days, it is better to keep the scalp clean with light oil or no oil at all.
