Dalai Lama rules out outside interference in successor selection
The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, has made it clear that no external parties will be allowed to interfere in the selection of his successor. According to the Dalai Lama, the decision will rest exclusively with his “Gaden Phodrang Trust,” which will ensure the continuation of centuries-old traditions.
This statement comes amid tensions with China, which has rejected the Dalai Lama’s authority on the matter and insisted that the Chinese government must approve the next Dalai Lama.
Ahead of his 90th birthday, speculation was rife that the Dalai Lama might provide guidance on choosing his successor. Devotees from around the world gathered in Dharamshala, northern India, to mark the occasion.
Previously, the Dalai Lama appeared hesitant to discuss the succession issue. However, on Wednesday, he clarified his position, putting an end to uncertainty.
Penpa Tsering, head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, expressed unanimous support for the Dalai Lama’s decision during a press briefing.
